Caregiver involvement is a core tenant of Essential Speech & ABA Therapy. After all, no one knows a child better than their caregivers!
As such, we work closely with caregivers to develop individualized treatment plans and provide ongoing support and guidance. By working together, our team of experts and caregivers can help children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) reach their full potential!
What is Caregiver Involvement?
Simply put, caregiver involvement means a child’s family members or guardians are encouraged to participate in their child’s treatment plan. For example, caregivers are encouraged to outline goals for their children. These goals are based on the child’s strengths and weaknesses. They may include simple phrases, like “I want” and “I need” or more complex behaviors, like adapting to new environments.
Caregivers can also offer ideas to help reinforce learned skills. For example, a caretaker can recommend certain toys or activities a child enjoys. This, in turn, would be used as a motivator or reward throughout the session.
How Does Caregiver Involvement Work?
At Essential Speech & ABA, Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs), Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs), and Occupational Therapists (OTRs) are trained to honor caregivers’ input. By speaking with their child’s team, caregivers can offer input that helps the Essential Speech & ABA Therapy experts modify behavior plans.
For example, a caretaker may notice that their child needs to review a skill or focus on other strengths. By addressing what they observed with their child’s team, caregivers offer valuable that helps their children thrive.
Caregiver Involvement: Does it End On-site?
No! Caregiver involvement encompasses two spheres: at the facility and at home. The Essential Speech & ABA Therapy team may recommend activities, reinforcement strategies, and tips to help your child reinforce what they learned on-site. This helps children master new skills while maintaining old ones.
Furthermore, our team encourages caretakers to use positive reinforcement when children use these new skills at home. Positive reinforcement utilizes rewards when a child demonstrates a desired behavior in the hope that the action is repeated. The team will identify the most effective times to use positive reinforcement, and several methods to encourage desired behavior.
Conclusion
Caregiver involvement is essential for the success of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). By working closely with caregivers, Essential Speech & ABA Therapy’s team of experts can develop individualized treatment plans and provide ongoing support and guidance. By working together, we can help children with ASD reach their full potential!
